About the Event
Join us in celebrating the launch of the Water Rangers Community Water Lab at ZERO! Our goal in the Wey catchment is to help with monitoring our rivers so they're safe for both otters and humans. That means great ecosystems and clean enough for swimming!
LAUNCHING THE LAB: The community-led lab is a first in our region and is designed to allow anyone to get answers about their local river. It brings together our already established water chemistry monitoring program with the ability to take samples for E.coli using a certified method, so we can be confident in our results. We'll allow anyone from the public to use the lab's services at a fraction of the cost of a professional lab.
REVIEWING RESULTS AND RESEARCH: This event is a celebration of the water monitoring program's successes over the past year, so we'll review our amazing accomplishments. Stella, a PhD student from University of Surrey will share some interpretations of our results. She'll also introduce us to her research into anti-microbial resistance.
THE WIDER CONTEXT: We'll hear from Lewis Campbell, a microbiologist from South East Rivers Trust and part of the River Wey Catchment Partnership, to understand how we fit into river restoration in the region. We'll also hear from Kat from Water Rangers about how the innovative work we're doing here is part of the national CaSTCo project.
YOUR ROLE: It's an interactive event! There'll be an opportunity to tour the lab, see some initial results, try out our water chemistry tests, and even meet some of the invertebrates that make up the backbone of a healthy river system. We are in the process of trying to secure some funding for supplies so we can send YOU out to collect samples for us all over the catchment. Secure your place so if this happens, we'll reserve supplies for you!
