About the Event

A glimpse into a life; a punch to the gut; a visceral image you can’t forget. A good short story contains all this – and more.

This one-off event with local writers will showcase the short story form. Come along, enjoy a glass of wine, and hear authors read from their award-winning work. Questions and discussion welcome!

Ruth Brandt is a writer and creative writing tutor. Her prize-winning short story collection No One

has any Intention of Building a Wall is published by Fly on the Wall Press. Her stories have been

widely published and nominated for prizes including the Best Small fictions and Pushcart Prize.

Sarah Hegarty’s fiction has been published in magazines and anthologies including Mslexia and The

Mechanics’ Institute Review. Her work has twice won the Yeovil Literary Prize and been shortlisted

for the Bridport, Exeter and Manchester prizes. Her debut collection, Magpie and Other Stories, is

out on September 28 from Troubador.

Alice Fowler is an award-winning writer of short stories and longer fiction. Her debut short story

collection, The Truth Has Arms and Legs, was published by Fly On The Wall Press in July 2023. Her

work has won the Historical Writers’ Association and Wells Festival of Literature short story prizes.

Listings include the Exeter, Bournemouth and Harper’s Bazaar prizes.

Julie Evans’ short fiction has won and been placed in a number of competitions. Her work

has been published in anthologies, magazines, national and local newspapers, recorded on

audio, and performed on stage. Julie lives in Surrey and her favourite things are family,

forests and firelight.

David Reading is a journalist from Ash. During lockdown, he and old friend Alexis Krite wrote a

collection of short stories called The Kindness of Time. Sales support local charity Challengers.

Dave has written three unpublished novels and a factual book on spirituality. He writes regularly

for the Guildford Dragon NEWS.
