Guildford Library of Things: Back and Better Than Ever!

Writer's picture: Thomas LashbrookeThomas Lashbrooke

The Guildford Library of Things (LoT) has made a fantastic comeback this July with a mission to help local residents save money, reduce home clutter, and cut down waste. And the best part? You can borrow over 100 items for free!

Making a Difference

Borrowing from the Guildford LoT isn’t just about getting free stuff. It’s about making a real impact. Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:

  • £38,000 saved by residents

  • 6 tonnes of CO2e reduced

  • 300 members signed up on the service

Since our soft relaunch on 17th June, we’ve grown to just over 300 members and completed 86 loans. That’s another 1.5 tonnes of CO2e saved!

What Can You Borrow?

The Guildford LoT has something for everyone:

  • Tools

  • Gardening gear

  • Board games and outdoor games

  • Quick-assemble gazebos

  • Pressure washers and window cleaners

  • Camping equipment (chairs, cool boxes, etc.)

  • Office equipment

And that’s just to name a few!

A Community Effort

Launch day event

This project was described as a beautiful partnership [between Zero Carbon Guildford and Guildford Library] by chair of Surrey County Council, Saj Hussain. We first explored this idea when the LoT was on Friary Street. Now, we’re thrilled to offer an expanded service at our new home in Guildford Library.

Special thanks to What Next?, Bryony Calverly & Nick Illot from Surrey County Council, and our dedicated Library of Things team.

Growing the Movement

We’re not stopping at Guildford. Surrey Libraries are working with other climate charities to spread the LoT love. What Next? and Godalming Library launched their own LoT last year as well as Love Haslemere Hate Waste. Dorking Library is also exploring plans with Circular Dorking. If you’re outside Guildford and want to set up a library of things send the team an email and they'll be happy to share their experience and advice info@guildfordlibraryofthings.org.

Guildford Library Launch Event Highlights

Our relaunch event was a blast! We had speeches from Surrey County Council Chair Saj Hussain and ZCG Chair Olivia. The Mayor and Surrey County Council Members were there too, showing their support for this awesome initiative.
